Protecting Freshwater Resources  The Cross Florida Barge Canal was officially deauthorized in 1990, and since that time FDE has focused its efforts on repairing the damage caused by the project. Efforts to restore more than 16 miles of river, 20 natural springs, and nearly 8,000 acres of biologically diverse hardwood floodplain forests are ongoing. Removal of the Kirkpatrick Dam (formerly known as Rodman Dam) and freeing the Ocklawaha River will represent a tremendous victory for the environment, and will provide a lasting legacy for future generations of Floridians.

Conservation of Public Lands Florida Defenders of the Environment has long been involved in the management and conservation of public lands. FDE has helped to protect the Osceola National Forest from mining and worked to improve the management of the Ocala National Forest and several state parks. FDE played a key role in getting the former barge canal lands designated a greenway and managed for conservation. The resulting green corridor is named the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway in honor of one of FDE’s founders.
